Ramadhan Day 17/ Juzz 17
"And of the people is he who worships Allah on an edge.
If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial,
he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world and the
Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss." [Hajj:11]
Allah in this verse gives the example of a man who is on the
edge. He is on the fence: between faith and disbelief.
Through this imagery Allah is describing to us someone who
worships Him only in good times. Whose faith is neither here nor there. So, if
something good happens to him, he is happy, and if a trial afflicts him, he
turns back in his faith and stops believing.
This person is only committed to Islam as long as it is
convenient for him. But, when things don't go his way, he begins to question 'Why
is Allah doing this to me?'
Allah says that this type of person has lost both his dunya and
akhirah. Meaning, even the little bit of faith he had didn't amount to anything
because he failed all tests of life.
Allah uses a word here that He normally doesn't use. 'KHUSR' خسر
which means the 'ultimate, ultimate loss.'
If you feel like your Imaan disappears at certain times,
especially in times of test, then ask Allah for 'thabaat' - firmness of the
heart and know that life is but a test of your faith.
Hold onto the rope of faith as tight as you can, cling onto it
at all times and don't be like those who worship Allah only when things are
going the way they like.
Remember, we are slaves of Allah. It's not about our desires and
what we want. It's about submitting to the will of Allah, completely and
humbling yourself to His authority without questioning.
